The Top 7 Memory Foam Mattress Myths

Please read the following to learn the truth about memory foam

1. Myth: The density of the memory foam in the mattress will have nothing to do with how long your memory foam mattress will last.

Fact: Even though a 2.5 pound and a 5 pound memory foam mattress might feel the same, the truth is that over time the 2.5 pound mattress will not “reshape” into its’ normal shape and will start to even cave in sooner than a higher weight memory foam mattress.

2. Myth: Tempurpedic memory foam is the only real or authentic memory foam available.

Fact: This is not true because NASA is the engineer of the first memory foam product that was first used by astronauts that needed pressure relief for their space missions.  Therefore, the memory foam patent is held by NASA and Tempurpedic pushed the memory foam product for public use.  Now memory foam or even gel mattresses are produced by many companies and is available in as good if not a better quality than the Tempurpedic company offers today.

3. Myth: There is such a thing as rubber memory foam.

Fact: Memory Foam is a type of polyurethane foam call polyfilex while Latex Foam is made from rubber.  There are two main differences between memory foam and latex foam.

  1. Latex Foam will recover or bounce back more quickly than Memory Foam.

  2. Latex Foam is manufactured with holes in it that determine its’ firmness where the smaller the holes in it, then the firmer the foam .

4. Myth: Any memory foam density will be fine.

Fact: The best memory foam density is one that is between 2 pounds and 4 pounds.  If you get a memory foam topper that is one inch thick, it will not offer much resistance to your body and therefore you will just fall right down to the top of you mattress (a big waste of money).  Now please heed caution when looking at heavier memory foam because as the weight of the foam increases you will find that the mattresses will not leave its’ shape as fast when you toss and turn at night.  Thus, if you buy a 7 pound memory foam mattress at night you will feel like you are stuck in one place on the mattress.

5. Myth: The density of your memory foam mattress will not impact the temperature felt in it.

Fact: Depending how the memory foam is manufactured, in general the denser the memory foam the more heat the mattress will insulate.

6. Myth: The more dense the memory foam the more firm the foam will be

Fact: The firmness of the memory foam will depend upon how the memory foam is made.  For example, two companies can make a five pound memory foam mattress and it will have the same dimensions but when you try them out you will find that one is more firm than the other.  So the best policy with trying out memory foam mattresses is to try out different brands and see which is best for you.

7. Myth: Memory foam is for everyone
